At this time, I operate as an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. Many clients choose to use their out-of-network benefits to receive partial reimbursement for therapy by submitting a superbill to their insurance provider.
If cost or access has been a barrier to therapy, you may qualify for support through foundations aiming to increase access to treatment. Healing should be accessible, learn more on my Care Made Simple page.
Self-pay and out-of-network benefits
A superbill is an itemized document that includes the required information to request insurance reimbursement if your plan offers out-of-network mental health benefits. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and varies by plan. Reimbursement, if available, will be sent directly to you, not the practice. A superbill can be provided to you upon request after each session. All session fees are due at the time of service.
What is a superbill?
Insurance providers require a billable mental health diagnosis to approve and reimburse services, even when the primary need is life stress, personal growth, or major life transitions. When services are billed (or reimbursed) through insurance, clinical information is shared with insurance companies and may become a part of your permanent medical record. As a self-pay client, no mental health information is sent to your insurance provider, no diagnosis is required to receive care, and there is no third-party involvement or oversight. If you choose to receive partial reimbursement from your insurance provider, a diagnosis will be necessary.
Why do some clients prefer self-pay?
Questions about using out-of-network benefits?
I encourage clients to contact their insurance provider to ask:
Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met?
Do I need authorization to begin mental health treatment to receive reimbursement?
What percentage of psychotherapy sessions is reimbursed?
Do you cover telehealth psychotherapy?
